Apr 2007 - Construction Begins on Largest Self Storage Facility

24 April, 2007- Steel Storage Middle East LLC & Core Construction Company Co LLC have broken ground on what the owners believe to be is the world’s largest purpose built self storage facility in the world. Big Yellow FZ LLC; a franchise of Europe’s leading  Self Storage operator Big Yellow Group PLC has chosen the International Media Production Zone in Dubai as the home of this mammoth structure which is geared towards operating as a hub for residential/commercial/industrial storage for both international and local users. The facility also boasts an entire building dedicated to under-bond self storage.

Planning and implementing the logistics of such an enormous project has been a major task, with the structure’s materials being shipped from Steel Storage’s production plant in Singapore in more than a hundred containers, each weighing between 10-20 tonnes. With completion scheduled in ten months, the facility has five separate buildings, with four two-level structures and a high-bay logistics building. Ultimately boasting a staggering 2879 storage units, culminating in a total net lettable area in excess of 30,000 square metres.

Ryan Cornelius, Chairman of Big Yellow FZ LLC recognised that the key to this projects success was in finding “…the right design team, and a construction company who understands the local conditions, as well as what the client is trying to achieve. This is clearly the case with Steel Storage with their experience in the industry”

The project marks the take-off of the self-storage industry in the Middle East as the first facility of significance to be built in the region. It also marks Steel Storage’s typical innovative early entrance into potential markets, establishing operations in the Middle East to compliment its existing plants in Europe, Australia Singapore. The construction of the facility is being overseen by Brian Perry, Director of the Steel Storage Group and Manager of Steel Storage Middle East, and William Brennan the Structural Engineering manager for the Steel Storage Group.

Core Construction Company Co was selected to develop the sub terrain works and earthworks, while Steel Storage, who have been working collaboratively with the owners for the last two years, are responsible for the development of the design, construction of the facility, internal fit-out, and implementation of access control and security through its subsidiary partner PTI access control systems.
